Private Residence on Idle Creek

This project is located in Sherwood Forest, a gated community near Crownsville, MD along the Severn River. This residential community was established in the 1920s as a summer getaway for city dwellers. The houses initially were cottages painted brown or green only. While many have been renovated or reconstructed for year-round living, the colors must remain brown or green. The neighborhood covenants restrict all new home development from further blocking water views of any neighbor surrounding the property to be renovated or reconstructed. In addition, construction can only occur from September through May, thus applying greater pressure to the construction process. At the site, the existing second floor was removed to the lower level foundation and reconstructed to this new gambrel-roof shingle-style cottage. Entering the house through the inviting screened porch that runs the length of the home, visitors are welcomed into the cozy kitchen area, which opens to a formal living room and dining room. The master bedroom and guestrooms also are on the first floor. The second floor includes a tower office with windows on three sides and sweeping views of Idle Creek and the Severn River. The children’s bedrooms are also on the second floor and are brightly painted to reflect their individual personalities and contain many built-ins and window seats. The downstairs family room is a self-sufficient space for entertaining and features a kitchen area, bar and pool table. The large stone fireplace, built-in bookcases and beautiful moldings bring warmth and coziness to this large space.
